DAY 2: TUESDAY, JUNE 21, 2005
(Napton to Cropredy)

Using his windlass, Kyle raised and lowered what's called a ground paddle. By raising the paddle, water goes from one level to the other through an underground chamber along the side of the lock. Mary Ellen works the large swinging beam of the lock gate. Both jobs required a bit of exertion, but weren't generally difficult. Sometimes the paddles were what the canal-folk call "stiff". From the look on Kyle's face, this one was apparently not too stiff.
