I appear to have the easy job here. Driving the 6' 10" wide boat into a chamber about 7' wide requires paying attention, but it's not particularly hard work. Kyle and Mary Ellen prepare to close the gates and let water into the lock while I ride the throttle to keep the boat in the middle of the lock. Sometimes, the flow of water into the lock would move the boat backward and at other times forward. There was no apparent logic or ability to predict which way the boat would drift.
