DAY 2: TUESDAY, JUNE 21, 2005
(Napton to Cropredy)

Having tackled nine locks between Napton and Marston Doles, you reach what's called the summit section of the South Oxford Canal. This is a long meandering section with no locks for many miles. Coming from the north, the locks which previously took us uphill will later take us downhill as we descend toward the Thames at Oxford. The Oxford canal is one of the oldest canals in England. When it was built, the engineers decided to simply follow the contours of the land instead of digging deep cuttings through hills or creating an even larger number of locks. Much is made of the fact that landmarks, like this radio tower, can be seen for many miles while the canal zigzags lazily across the summit.
