(Oxford to North of Somerton)
Today begins our trip back up the South Oxford canal, covering the route from the opposite direction. Over the next few days, our journey will take us all the way back up to Napton Junction, where we will head west on the Grand Union Canal to Warwick. We'll include fewer photos of the next couple of days, since we've been over this stetch of water before.
This holiday essentially amounted to two "out and back" trips. Napton Junction marked the point where the first out and back went to Oxford. Once we get back to Napton Junction, we'll essentially do another out and back to Warwick. These "out and back" trips involve seeing many of the same things you've seen before, but somehow they always seem different when going in the other direction. Many people prefer to take a "circuit" route where one never covers the same area more than once.
This photo shows the daily duty of taking on water at one of the many waterpoints on the canal. While there is plenty of diesel fuel for the two weeks, taking on water (for drinking and showers) is something you pretty much have to do every day. Our canal guide book showed the location of all the waterpoints.
