NWS - Virginia Area Forecast Discussion

Experimental Forecast Images
(This is VERY cool)

The National Weather Service is the government agency that makes your weather forecast. They take the readings, collect the data, generate the computer models, acquire the radar and satellite images and then interpret it all. Chances are, your local TV weather person uses this same resource. I get the most out of the "Area Forecast Discussion." The one thing you don't get in a weather forecast is the level of confidence a forecaster has in the forecast. This "product" helps you see whether the models are in agreement and look into the forecaster's mind :-) If you've had any basic meteorology and understand dewpoints, ridges, troughs and "shortwaves", you'll get more out of this than anything else. It uses a bunch of shorthand and here's what some of it means:
* LLJ = Low Level Jetstream
* S/WV= Short Wave (an area of lower pressure that is often a "triggering mechanism")
* QPF = Quantitative Precipitation Forecast
* POP = Probability of Precipitation

Internet Movie Database The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) was started in 1990 on the rec.arts.movies newsgroup by a group of movie fans. This site catalogs all sorts of information on over 250,000 movies made since the dawn of cinema plus even more on over 900,000 people who helped make them. This site is indispensible to the movie fan.
Washington Post We get the Washington Post newspaper everyday, yet somehow their web site is one of my most frequently visited sites.
Yahoo! Yahoo! is still the best human edited catalog of web resources. Nicely categorized and bandwidth friendly.
Google Even Yahoo! has selected Google for its search functions. A powerful tool that does a great job of determining the importance and relevance of Web pages.
TV Guide Get complete television listings for your area and it's completely free.
Everything2.com My son, Matt, turned me on to this site. E2 is an excellent reference site that's fun, in a laterally associative way.
Google Maps Newest map site on the scene, but WOW!
Multimap What MapQuest is for the U.S., Multimap is for much of the rest of the world.
MSN Terraserver For anyone who loves to spend time just looking at aerial/satellite photos and maps.
Streamingmedia.com Streamingmedia.com is a good site for staying up to date on the latest in streaming media technologies.
